Commemorating the 85th Anniversary of the Belfast Blitz

The Old Dundalk Society is pleased to invite you to the second lecture in its Spring 2026 series. The event will take place at the County Museum Dundalk on Friday 1st May, commencing promptly at 7.30 pm.  (Note earlier time of Lecture). Join us for a special lecture marking the 85th anniversary of the Belfast Blitz, recalling the extraordinary response of fire brigades from Dundalk, Dublin, Dún Laoghaire, and Drogheda who travelled north to assist during the devastating air raids of 1941. The speakers on the night will be Jim Kerley (Dundalk) local historian and retired fireman, and Mark Wigton (Belfast) who is the Outreach Officer at the Northern Ireland War Memorial Museum in Belfast, which is a Home Front Exhibition telling the story of Northern Ireland’s role in the Second World War. The Dundalk based historic fire engine the Merryweather travelled to assist with the relief efforts in Belfast during the German blitz of the city. After the talk you can visit the Merryweather which will be on display in the Museum courtyard (all day long), along with other artifacts from the second world war. As space is limited at the venue, we recommend arriving early to avoid disappointment. Voluntary contributions are welcome at the door. Light refreshments will be served.
